3,742. Who May Eat Shemittah Produce

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 5:13

Shemittah produce may not be brought from Israel to outside of Israel, not even to Syria (meaning lands annexed by Israel). It may not be fed to non-Jews or hired hands (since it resembles paying them with shemittah produce). If someone is hired for a week, a year or a month, or if his agreement includes meals, then he is considered a member of the household and may be fed shemittah produce. Guests may be fed shemittah produce.

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 5:14

The court doesn’t assign a woman shemittah produce (for sustenance in her husband’s absence) because this would constitute paying a debt with shemittah produce. She may, however, collect her sustenance from her husband’s shemittah produce.
